Moments and alerts

The few times Kairos speaks up — every kind of moment, what triggers it, alert or glance, the screen it opens, and how notifications are limited and muted.

A rotation that works is invisible. Kairos speaks only when something needs you: a moment. Moments show at the top of Today, in the menu bar, and, for the ones that matter most, as notifications.

Alert or glance

  • An alert is worth a notification.
  • A glance shows in the menu bar and on Today, without a notification.

Each moment opens the screen that acts on it: Week ahead, Laurels, Accounts, Sessions or Settings.

Every kind

Moment When Level
Capacity about to go unused The week plan leaves room unused when an account's week resets within three days: at least a tenth of a session, or an API key's credit of $5 or more that expires. Also an account whose use-up-by time comes, for Claude Code. It is a nudge to run work you put off, never a score. Alert from half a session, or $10, within 36 hours; otherwise a glance.
Accounts running out The forecast runs out of accounts at this week's pace within three days. Alert within 24 hours; otherwise a glance.
Monday recap Monday to Wednesday from 08:00: last week's laurel, its rings, the work it served beside what the plans cost, and one thing to try. Alert. Opens Laurels.
Claude in Chrome The account the Claude in Chrome extension is signed in to is out of room (an alert), or Chrome stopped connecting there or never has (a glance that says where to name the account). Someone who never uses Chrome sees none. Alert or glance. See Claude in Chrome.
Night Shift's brief A shift ended: what its chores did. Shown for 18 hours, so you hear of it once you are back. Alert. See Night Shift.
Use up by An account of a tool Kairos does not plan (Cursor, Devin, …) whose use-up-by time comes within three days. Kairos cannot read what it has left, so it says when. Alert within 24 hours. See Use up by.
Sessions and tasks What the engine would otherwise post itself: a session that needs you, the capacity guard pausing or resuming, work put off for later. Sent at once.
Pages A session published a page to claude.ai on an account the browser is not signed in to, so its link says "Page not found" there. Shown for three days, once per page; it opens Kairos's copy. Glance. See Pages.
Chrome for each account "Set up Chrome for side": sessions on an account use Claude in Chrome, and its own Chrome is not set up. "Sign in Chrome for side as account2@example.com": it is set up but signed in to another claude.ai account, or none. "Started … again for Claude in Chrome": Kairos continued a session whose old process kept failing to connect. "… is not running": Kairos ended a session to connect Chrome afresh and could not continue it; the moment says how to resume it. Glance; alert for a session not running. See Chrome for each account.
Unusual use A session uses far more than its usual, or far more than the other sessions; or the Mac is short of memory, or its disk is low or filling. Alert, or a glance once Kairos has asked the session about it. See Unusual use.

Two more come from the bills: a failed payment or a double charge (an alert), a subscription outside Kairos or one paid for and unused (a glance), and on a renewal day, until Kairos has read that bill, a glance to open Billing.

Notifications

On a Mac, alerts become notifications while Kairos runs in the menu bar:

  • Only alert moments, of a kind you have not muted, and once per moment.
  • At most three a day.
  • Quiet hours, 22:00 to 08:00: a notification is held until 08:00, or dropped if what it warns of is over by then.
  • Sessions and tasks arrive at once, outside the day's count.
  • A click opens the screen that acts on it.

Kairos asks macOS for permission once, during setup; macOS shows its own Allow and Don't Allow.

Muting a kind

Settings › Alerts has a switch for each kind: Capacity about to go unused, Accounts running out, Monday recap, Claude in Chrome, Night Shift's brief, Use up by, Sessions and tasks and Unusual use. See Settings › Alerts. A muted kind still shows on Today and in the menu bar.
