What Kairos does by itself
Night Shift
Chores that run while you are away on capacity that would expire — tasks on branches of their own and second opinions from Codex, when a shift starts and ends, the cap, the morning brief, and the command.
Every week, some of each account's capacity resets unused. Night Shift spends it on chores you wrote in advance, while you are away.
Chores
- A task: fix the flaky tests, raise coverage, update dependencies, write the missing docs. It runs as work put off for later does: a background session in a worktree of its own, on a new branch, on an account with capacity to spare.
- A second opinion: Codex reviews the changes committed in the repository since the chore last ran. It reads only and changes nothing; its review goes into the brief.
A chore never works in the repository's own checkout, and nothing merges by itself.
When it runs
- You have been away 30 minutes (no keyboard or mouse) and the Mac is on power.
- On capacity that would otherwise expire: a task starts only on an account with capacity to spare.
- Each chore at most once a night; at most 4 chores a night unless you change it; up to two share an account at once.
A shift ends when you are back, the Mac goes on battery, or after 20 hours. A chore still running then is held at a safe point and continues on the next shift. Your own work always comes first.
In Sessions
The Night Shift shelf has Run chores while you are away ("Runs your chores while you are away and the Mac is on power, on branches of their own."), "At most 4 chores a night", the list of chores with when each last ran, and Add a Chore….
The sheet, "Add a chore":
- A second opinion from Codex on the day's commits, or a task;
- What should it do? (for a review: What should it look at?, optional);
- Repository;
- "It runs in a worktree on a branch of its own, never on main. Nothing merges by itself." For a review: "Codex reads the repository and changes nothing; its review is in the morning brief."
Before it is on: "Starts once you have been away 30 minutes with the Mac on power, on capacity that would otherwise expire. Turn it on to begin."
The brief
When a shift ends, its brief is a moment on Today, the Mac and the iPhone ("While you were away · 01:10 to 07:30"): what was done, the branches to review, how far each account's week went, and what still expires. Each chore's line:
| It says | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Waits for an account with spare capacity | Nothing to spare yet. |
| Running on side | A task under way. |
| Codex is reviewing | A second opinion under way. |
| Held while you are here; continues on the next shift | You came back. |
| Done on side · 3 commits, 5 files | Finished; review its branch. |
| Reviewed by Codex | Open Codex's review to read it. |
| Could not run: … | Why it failed. |
The brief's alert is Night Shift's brief in Settings › Alerts.
