Sessions

Every running session — the groups, each row's lines, a session's detail with its activity, helpers and resources, sending it a message, changing its model, handing it off, and the shelves for terminals, pages, work put off for later and the Night Shift.

Sessions shows every coding session running on the Mac, of every tool Kairos reads: Claude Code in a terminal or an editor, Codex, background tasks. Pick one to see what it is doing now.

The list

Sessions are grouped, the ones that need you first:

  1. Waiting on you: a question, or a permission to answer.
  2. Working.
  3. Idle sessions.

With none: "No sessions running." On a Mac, with none picked: "Pick a session".

Each row has the session's name (its title, or its folder), its account and tool, and the lines that apply:

Line Meaning
Asked: … The question it is waiting on.
Last action: Bash The last tool it used.
2 background tasks: … Work it started that still runs.
CPU 240% · 1.8 GB What it uses now; 100% is one core.
Runs on spare capacity Kairos holds and resumes it with its account's spare room.
A pause label Kairos asked it to pause before a limit, or it is held.
An alert label It is using far more than usual. See Unusual use.

Under the sessions, more shelves:

  • Terminals and editors: each window sessions run in, with what it runs and what else it holds ("Everything running in it, its sessions' work and the rest").
  • Pages: pages your sessions published to claude.ai. See Pages.
  • Later: work put off for spare capacity. See Later.
  • Night Shift: chores while you are away. See Night Shift.

A session

The detail shows, top to bottom:

  • Asks you, when it waits on you: the question. "Answer it in its own window; a message waits behind it."
  • Runs in Terminal (or the editor's name): the window it runs in.
  • Model: the model and effort it runs on, with Change (see below).
  • Tokens it used, and Disk: what it wrote and holds.
  • Show: Activity, Helpers or Resources. On a wide window they sit side by side.
  • Activity: what it did, newest first: prompts, tools, answers. "Nothing recent." Copy copies an entry.
  • Helpers: the subagents it runs. "None running." or, for a tool that does not report them, "Its tool does not say."
  • In the background: shells and Tasks it started.
  • Resources: its CPU, memory, disk writes and network over an hour, a day or a week. See Charts.
  • Hand off to Codex when out (when another tool can take over). See Baton.
  • Run on spare capacity (for a session that can wait). "Kairos holds it while its account has none to spare, and continues it, or moves it, when one does."

When it has ended: "This session has ended."

Sending a message

The box at the bottom sends the session a message, as if you typed it in its window. A counter shows "120/8000". After sending: "Sent: …". When the session offers choices, Kairos lists them under "Any of these".

  • A session waiting on a question gets the message after you answer it there.
  • A session in another permission mode may hold the message until you let it in; see Settings › Sessions.
  • "Kairos on the Mac cannot send messages yet." means the engine is older than the app.

Changing the model

Change lists the models and efforts the session's tool offers ("High effort", …). A running session keeps its model: "It keeps its model while it runs. Kairos gives the command that resumes it on Opus." Copy copies that command. A tool Kairos cannot change says "Pick it in the tool itself."

On an iPhone

Sessions is a tab. A row opens the session's detail; Open in Today's "Needs you" opens it directly. Links: kairos://sessions and kairos://sessions/claude-code:<session id>.
